“We all have different gifts, each of which came because of the grace God gave us. The person who has the gift of prophecy should use that gift in agreement with the faith. Anyone who has the gift of serving, should serve. Anyone who has the gift of teaching should teach. Whoever has the gift of encouraging others should encourage. Whoever has the gift of giving to others should give freely. Anyone who has the gift of being a leader should try hard when he leads. Whoever has the gift of showing mercy to others should do so with joy.” Romans 12:6-8
We are studying the spiritual gifts at my church and the big ah-ha for me is that your spiritual gift and mine was GIVEN to us when we asked the Lord into our life. It is not necessarily our natural talents. Oh, our gift may work in tandem with our natural abilities but God imparted very specific gifts when we asked him into our life. My assumption in the past when I read this passage was that God gave me the gift of leadership because I often end up in a leadership role. I already owned my own company and was already a leader when I asked the Lord into my life. I was the first born and so by default, you are used to leadership as a first born child. But when we got saved, God stepped in with a spiritual gift that may or may not be something you are already naturally good at. It may be that this new gift, once you discover it, in tandem with your natural abilities will work together to fulfill your destiny.
The gifts listed in this passage are not all the gifts mentioned in the Bible. Our job is to spend time in the Word, spend time with God, and let Him lead us to these gifts so that we may fulfill the mission that God uniquely placed you here for. You are alive, you are reading this, hence, your mission is not done. To be totally fulfilled, we need to be serving the body of Christ in the area of our primary spiritual gift.
